Hoya — Black Dragon
Black Dragon’s older pubicalyx label and its association with Hoya pubicorolla subsp. anthracina.
Black Dragon is presented independently of Hoya pubicalyx. Its association with Hoya pubicorolla subsp. anthracina does not authenticate every plant.
Overview
Black Dragon is sold under Hoya pubicorolla subsp. anthracina as well as the older Hoya pubicalyx label. Hoya New published the subspecies in 2013, and Kew’s Plants of the World Online accepts it. The botanical name is established; identifying an individual plant from a selling label is a separate question. Doug Chamberlain’s older Vermont Hoyas account remains useful for its grower observations and reported provenance. The historical pubicalyx label is retained here as naming history.

What We Know
- Hoya pubicorolla subsp. anthracina was described in Hoya New 1(2):20–24 (2013). Kew currently accepts the subspecies, separately from Hoya pubicalyx.
- Black Dragon is used commercially with this subspecies name. That label association does not authenticate every plant or establish continuity to the type.
- Doug Chamberlain reports unmarked lime-green leaves and flowering in his grow tent, with lighter flowers than a supplier photograph. This uncontrolled comparison does not establish a preferred light level.
- His account traces the plant through SRQ Hoyas to Forrest Treasures and quotes George Mendoza reporting western-Luzon wild origin. Original correspondence and individual accession continuity remain unverified.
What We Are Still Learning
Which accession records connect plants sold as Black Dragon to Hoya pubicorolla subsp. anthracina?
What would help: Original labels and propagation history, documented flowering material, and comparison with the 2013 description and type.
Do traceable plants support a distinct growing recommendation?
What would help: Repeated observations on identified material with dates, conditions and suitable comparisons.
