The established variegated cultivar and its naming history.

Overview

Hoya australis ‘Lisa’ is an established variegated cultivar. It grows as a climbing vine, with leaves that can show green, yellow and pink, often with purple-tinged new growth, and clusters of very fragrant flowers. Mark Randal described ‘Lisa’ in Fraterna in 2007. It originated in cultivation, but its original grower and country of origin have not been confirmed.

What We Know

  • The Hoya cultivar registrar recognizes ‘Lisa’ as an established and accepted cultivar of Hoya australis.
  • Mark Randal described it as a variegated sport in 2007—a change arising on an existing plant. That reported origin does not authenticate every plant sold as Lisa.
  • The registrar cites Randal’s 2007 Fraterna description as establishing the name. That date does not establish when the plant was first selected or sold.
  • If your plant was received as ‘Lisa’, keep that name together with its supplier or accession details. Those records may help trace its history. For shared growing information, see the Hoya australis page; the evidence reviewed here does not establish a separate care routine for Lisa.

What We Are Still Learning

Who first selected and named ‘Lisa’, and where?

What would help: Dated breeder or nursery records, early catalogues, or original correspondence identifying the selector, the person who named it, and its place of origin.

Contribute evidence for this question

Does ‘Lisa’ respond differently from green Hoya australis under the same growing conditions?

What would help: Controlled cultivation studies comparing identified plants of similar maturity, with pests, root health, light, temperature, watering and substrate accounted for.
