Hoya lacunosa — Scarlet Glow

The Indonesian Bruno (red) line distributed by UPT and subsequently named Scarlet Glow.

Current evidence boundary

Follow the documented Indonesian and UPT naming history and distinguish Scarlet Glow from Red Bruno material of other or unresolved provenance.

Overview

According to Unsolicited Plant Talks (UPT), this material originated at Fendi Hoya Nursery in Indonesia as a mutation of Hoya lacunosa Bruno. UPT obtained it in early 2026 and sold it as Bruno (red), also circulated as Red Bruno. UPT’s listing records the grower’s rename to Scarlet Glow on 11 August 2026.

What We Know

  • UPT identifies Fendi Hoya Nursery in Indonesia as the source of its Bruno (red) material and reports bringing it back in early 2026.
  • The current UPT listing preserves Bruno (red) as the former name and dates the grower’s Scarlet Glow naming to 11 August 2026.
  • Use Scarlet Glow for material documented as belonging to that named line, including traceable cuttings from it. Plants received as Red Bruno without that connection should retain Red Bruno rather than being relabelled Scarlet Glow.
  • The original grower’s material and traceable propagated descendants do not need to be purchased directly from UPT by every later owner. The relevant evidence is the plant’s provenance.
  • The supplier’s reported origin and colour observations do not independently establish genetics or stable inheritance.

What We Are Still Learning

Can the earliest grower and distribution records be documented?

What would help: Original dated Fendi Hoya Nursery labels, naming records and transfer records for the material distributed by UPT.

Contribute evidence for this question

Does a plant received as Red Bruno belong to Scarlet Glow?

What would help: A documented acquisition and propagation chain to the named Indonesian line. Seller recollection or colour alone is insufficient.

Contribute evidence for this question

Which foliage features persist through propagation?

What would help: Dated observations of identified plants and their cuttings under recorded conditions.

What are its flowers and flowering behaviour?

What would help: Identified flower photographs and dated observations, with measurements and growing conditions.

Common Misconceptions

  • Red Bruno is not a universal synonym for Scarlet Glow.
  • A similar red leaf colour cannot establish that a plant belongs to the Scarlet Glow line.
  • Purchasing from another seller does not exclude Scarlet Glow when a documented propagation chain connects the plant to the named line.
