Hoya kerrii — Speckles (accession unresolved)
The conflicting IML 1780 captions behind the kerrii Speckles label.
This profile documents a conflict between collection labels and a historical accession list. It preserves the reported names without choosing a replacement accession number.
Overview
Speckles appears as a Hoya kerrii label in the MyHoyas collection album. Album K gives it the number IML 1780, but album N uses that number for Hoya nabawanensis. Liddle’s January 2009 catalogue also assigns IML 1780 to nabawanensis. These records leave the accession behind the Speckles label unresolved; they do not identify every plant carrying that name.

What We Know
- MyHoyas album K captions a plant as kerrii Speckles with IML 1780. The album is marked updated 11 July 2019; that date does not establish when the label first appeared.
- The same collection’s album N captions nabawanensis with IML 1780. Liddle’s January 2009 catalogue assigns that number to nabawanensis from Sabah, so the kerrii caption conflicts with the historical accession list.
- The catalogue lists kerrii as IML 0154, pubescent-leaved IML 0784 and variegated IML 1497. Those entries do not establish which accession belongs to Speckles.
- Keep a plant’s complete original label and purchase or propagation history. A similar pattern, a shared selling name or a repeated number is not enough to establish that two plants are the same material.
What We Are Still Learning
What accession was recorded on the original Speckles plant?
What would help: An original label or accession ledger, ideally with dated photographs and correspondence showing how the name and number were applied.
Where did the conflicting IML 1780 caption originate?
What would help: Dated earlier album versions or the collection owner’s original records showing when that number entered the kerrii caption.
Which living plants can be traced to the original material?
What would help: A documented chain of cuttings or suppliers tied to an identified parent plant, rather than the name alone.
