Hoya multiflora ‘WonderPhil’

A documented cultivar identity within Hoya multiflora, presented separately because Silver and Splash are historically associated labels but are not unique identifiers.

Current evidence boundary

The accepted cultivar denomination and repeated ambiguity around Silver and Splash create a distinct reader need. No form-specific care difference is asserted.

Overview

WonderPhil is an accepted cultivar of Hoya multiflora, described by the registrar with broad leaves ranging from silver with green mottling to almost entirely silver, and yellow flower petals with a white central crown. The originator reports selecting unusual seedlings and propagating them vegetatively in New Zealand. The cultivar was registered with the Hoya registrar in January 2024. It has a horticultural origin; Silver or Splash on a label alone does not identify it.

What We Know

  • The Hoya cultivar registrar accepts WonderPhil as a unique cultivar name, with no synonyms. Philip Bartz is identified as the developer, and Maria Cecelia Delvo-Bartz as registrant.
  • The registrar describes broad foliage with green mottling on silver leaves, sometimes extending across almost the whole leaf. Its flowers have yellow petals and a white central crown.
  • In the originator’s account reproduced by the registrar, three seedlings among about 200 seeds had the unusual traits. He reports multiplying those seedlings by vegetative propagation and obtaining consistent variegation from tissue-cultured plants. This is the originator’s report; it is not an independently replicated stability trial.
  • The originators previously sold their material under Silver and Splash. The registrar expressly warns that other multiflora plants also carry those descriptions, so neither word identifies WonderPhil by itself.
  • The 14 March 2022 IPONZ report records application 35619 as Filed and says technical examination had not yet started. It gives WonderPhil as the proposed denomination and New Zealand as the breeding location. This dated application record does not establish today’s protection status.
  • Keep the plant’s received label and provenance with the accession. Do not infer WonderPhil identity—or a different care regime—from Silver or Splash alone.

What We Are Still Learning

Which Silver- or Splash-labelled plants have a traceable propagation history to the originators’ WonderPhil material?

What would help: Original labels, dated purchase or propagation records and the supplier chain, supported by photographs of the same plant.

Contribute evidence for this question

How consistently does the foliage pattern persist in documented WonderPhil plants over time and through propagation?

What would help: Identified accessions, repeated dated photographs, propagation method and recorded growing conditions. The originator’s report provides a starting point for comparison.

Contribute evidence for this question

What is the current official status of New Zealand application 35619?

What would help: A current entry from the responsible official register; the 2022 snapshot is historical.

Common Misconceptions

  • Any multiflora sold as Silver or Splash is WonderPhil.
  • The originator’s propagation report proves the same stability in every plant sold with that label.
  • A dated application report establishes the current legal status.
