Overview
Hoya lacunosa is a species that creeps or climbs with slender, rooting stems, fleshy leaves marked by sunken areas between the veins, and clusters of small, fragrant, pale flowers with curled-back petals and velvety hairs. Carl Ludwig Blume published its name in the 1820s; Kew cites 1827. Its native range extends from southern Myanmar through western and central Malesia, including Java, Sumatra, Borneo, the Malay Peninsula, Thailand and the Philippines.

Evidence-Based Growing Insights
These notes report what a source or observation says, show what can reasonably be inferred, and keep the limits visible. They are not universal care promises.
Keep a healthy flower stalk after the blooms fall
Proposed takeaway: A bare flower stalk is not necessarily finished.
Evidence, reasoning and ways to respond
In the Bogor study, new buds could develop at the end of the same flower stalk after the earlier flowers had fallen.
Removing a living flower stalk can therefore remove a place where that plant could flower again.
Leave a healthy flower stalk in place after flowering; remove it if it has dried out or is damaged.
Source-identified lacunosa growing at Bogor Botanical Garden; no named cultivated form tested separately.
Moderate for repeat use of flower stalks in the observed plants; the study did not test pruning or promise repeat flowering for every plant.
Practical application is an inference from observed bud renewal, not a controlled pruning experiment.

Where It Grows
Hoya lacunosa is native from southern Myanmar through western and central Malesia, including Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the Philippines. Southeastern China is reported as introduced.
Reported native and introduced distribution
Regions shown and how to read the map
Native: Borneo; Java; Malay Peninsula; Myanmar (southern part in Kew’s range summary); Philippines; Sumatra; Thailand.
Introduced reports: Southeastern China.
Kew’s overall range summary specifies southern Myanmar. The shaded Myanmar reporting unit records presence within that unit; it does not imply that the species occurs throughout Myanmar.
Java and Sumatra are display spellings for Kew’s Jawa and Sumatera. Malaya is shown as the Malay Peninsula; the separate Borneo reporting unit is retained.
Southeastern China is an introduced reporting region and is not included in the native range.
This is a species-level distribution overview. It does not establish the origin of cultivated plants carrying locality labels such as Langkawi, Borneo or Malaysia.
These are simplified TDWG plant-distribution boundaries, not a habitat model or surveyed range edge. Neutral areas are background context; they do not establish absence. Natural Habitat
Kew records Hoya lacunosa as a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte of the wet tropical biome. Its native distribution includes mainland Southeast Asia and several Malesian islands; a cultivated occurrence or an old locality label is not, by itself, a verified wild record.
Rahayu, Trisnawati and Qoyim studied plants growing spontaneously on three different host trees at Bogor Botanical Garden. Their flower counts focused on one accessible mature plant. Those local observations help describe the plant’s life on trees, without defining the conditions required by every cultivated form.
Publication and naming history
Blume’s original diagnosis describes leaves hollowed above and convex beneath, and places the plant on trees near Buitenzorg, now Bogor, in Java. It is a short account; it does not describe the many named plants now circulating in cultivation.
The retained publication part has an 1826 wrapper, while Plants of the World Online cites the name from 1827. That difference in dating conventions is kept visible rather than turned into a precise publication day.
In 2017 Michele Rodda selected Leiden sheet 898168–188, bearing Blume’s handwritten label, as the lectotype: the specimen that fixes the application of the name. This page has checked that published designation, but has not independently examined the physical sheet.
Historical names explained
Hooker’s 1861 pallidiflora account describes broader leaf bases, less obvious venation and almost colourless flowers. Kew now includes that botanical name in lacunosa’s synonymy. That does not prove that every modern plant labelled pallidiflora descends from Hooker’s illustrated material.
The plant, leaves and flowers
Hooker’s 1855 account describes slender climbing stems that produce roots at the leaf attachment points. The leaves occur in opposite pairs, are fleshy to leathery, and have a sunken midrib and depressed areas between the veins.
Rahayu, Trisnawati and Qoyim (2007) describe clusters of white, hairy flowers with rolled-back petal tips, measuring 4–7 mm across in their study material at Bogor. Those measurements describe the plants studied; they are not an identification rule for every cultivated plant sold as lacunosa.
What the older illustrations can tell us
Hooker’s 1855 account describes a climbing plant supplied to the Royal Botanic Gardens by Mr Lowe of Clapton, with fragrant, velvety-haired flowers. The drawing was made in March 1854; the treatment was printed on 1 January 1855. Neither date establishes the first introduction into cultivation.
Hooker also warned that the artist had not been directed to the minute floral differences under discussion. The picture is a valuable historical witness, but cannot settle every modern identification question.
A year of flowering at Bogor
The Bogor study followed flowering from March 2004 through February 2005. The counted plant flowered in most months, paused in May and June, and reached its highest recorded flower count in November. This is a record of one place and year, rather than a flowering calendar for every home.
The authors observed new buds developing at the end of a flower stalk after earlier blooms had fallen. They also compared flowering with local weather. Their proposed climate triggers were observational associations; they were not controlled tests of a temperature drop, watering treatment or lighting schedule.
The flower’s hairs, nectar and scent
Basir and colleagues examined lacunosa flowers using microscopy in 2022. Their material had a white corolla, pale-yellow corona lobes and cylindrical single-celled hairs. They reported tissue interpreted as secondary nectaries in the corona lobes. The voucher is reported as UKMB ID033/2020; it has not been independently examined for this page.
Studying flower scent
A separate 2022 study by Basir and colleagues analysed flower headspace and flower transcriptomes. It provides chemical and molecular observations from the sampled material, rather than a universal scent recipe for lacunosa. Neither study tested the care needs of its many cultivated forms.

What We Still Do Not Know and Contribute
Which lacunosa names refer to the same cultivated material?
Why it matters: Different names can conceal a shared origin, while the same name can be used for different plants. Leaf resemblance alone cannot settle those relationships.
Do named lacunosa forms have different growing requirements?
Why it matters: Species-level observations do not show that every named form responds in the same way, or that its differences require different care.
