Documenting Hoya cultivar names

Rachel Colette Conroy is an independent Hoya researcher and the registrar for the International Cultivar Registration Authority for Hoya. The International Society for Horticultural Science records the authority’s appointment in 2023 and identifies Conroy as registrar, with Mark Randal as assistant registrar.[1]

Her work at HoyaCultivars.org brings together cultivar names, descriptions and their publication histories. The registry’s introduction explains how new names are checked and documented, while older names, synonyms and trade designations are assembled into an ongoing checklist. The aim is to make cultivated Hoyas easier to identify and their naming histories easier to follow.[2]

Research and writing in Stemma

Stemma Journal lists Conroy as its Chief Researcher. The journal and the Hoya registration authority are separate organizations that collaborate on publishing cultivar names and investigating older ones.[3]

Her 2022 article Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ examines the plant’s naming history through earlier publications and horticultural records. In the same year, she wrote The Late Great Ted Green, a biographical account of Ted Green accompanied by a bibliography of his work.[4][5]
